Issue:
Lipseal vs worn Compression Ring for CHHB Compressor
Resolution:
CHHB compressor(s) starting up loaded can be caused by a faulty lipseal or a worn piston compression ring. The bearing cavity pressure could be measured on this compressor by removing the plug from on top of the compressor, adjacent to the unload solenoid. The bearing cavity pressure should be slightly above suction pressure (20-25 psig above suction pressure). This pressure will help in differentiating whether the compressor is starting up loaded because of a faulty lipseal or the piston compression ring is worn.
Lipseal:
- Measure bearing cavity and suction pressure for the suspect circuit
- If the bearing cavity pressure is 20-25 psig or more greater than suction pressure, the lipseal is faulty and a re-route kit will need to be added.
- Refer to RTAA-SB-18 for additional details
Worn Piston Ring:
- Isolate the compressor
- Block load/unload solenoids with shim stock
- Use manifold gauge and pressure piston cavity to 100 psig, then close gauge
- Check piston cavity pressure 10 minutes later
- If leak rate is greater than 10 psig a piston rebuild should be done.
