Symbio™ 700 - Display Shows Black Boxes
Summary:
The display on the Symbio 700 is a LCD display that is driven by the Symbio main processor.
If the display powers up and shows black boxes across the screen like shown below:
This is possibly an issue with power to the display and typically is not recoverable, but it has also been found that low power to the Symbio board can cause this along with other operation issues.
Troubleshooting:
- Before condemning the board, power the unit down and disconnect all plugs from the board except J4 (24vac to board). If the display powers up and starts showing the normal boot screens and/or freezes during boot, check power on J4 and verify that it is in range. It has been found that a transformer with only 1 leg of power can power the board with 10-12vac. This is enough to power Symbio but when other devices are connected (Options Modules, Tstats, Powered Zone Sensors), will drag it down internally in the board and cause low voltage issues to the 5vdc and 3.3vdc components on the board.
- Verify that J4-1 (black wire) to ground is 24vac or more, if between 20-23 vac, verify that transformer primary voltage is tapped correctly (208-230vac units). If very low in the 8-16vac range, verify that neutral leg of the transformer is properly grounded (see wiring diagram)
- If the power is in range and the board appears to be fine, start connecting plugs to the board one at a time and check power after connecting each plug to narrow down a possible high current draw through the board.
- If the power is in range and the display still shows the black boxes with only J4 connected, something has more than likely happened to one of the 5vdc or 3.3vdc power supplies and the board will need to be replaced. Water and physical damage have been known to cause display issues.
