Purpose
This device prevents incorrect condenser fan rotation caused by wind or adjacent fan staging (one fan operating while the other one is off). Some motors will start and continue to run in the opposite direction if the reverse rotation is severe enough, causing premature motor failure. The device also helps prevent hard motor starts.
Installation Instructions
- Lockout/Tagout the equipment being serviced.
- Remove the fan guard/mount to gain full access to the condenser fan.
- Remove the fan.
- Slip the brake on the shaft, being careful to allow for the correct rotation. If the shaft will not rotate in the proper direction, remove the brake, turn it over and replace on shaft.
- Bend the rod so it will strike a motor mount, or one of the motor’s extended through bolts, when the shaft turns the wrong way.
- Reinstall fan on motor shaft. Make sure the fan hub is mounted flush with the end of the motor shaft.
- Reinstall fan guard/mount.
- Remove Lockout/Tagout and verify operation.
