All LCU powered exhaust kits are built and designed for downflow applications and mounted on the unit. Trane does not offer a powered exhaust kit for horizontal applications as it requires the powered exhaust to be installed on the return duct upstream of the return damper. Due to the varying factors on horizontal return ducts (size, length since every duct would be custom), design has never been done to accommodate horizontal powered exhaust.
The powered exhaust option is designed only for downflow units; however, the powered exhaust fan assembly has been successfully installed on horizontal units. Because the ductwork is coming into the side of the unit, it is necessary to attach the exhaust fan to the side of the ductwork before it connects to the side of the unit.
There are no drawings or reference materials for assisting in how to install the exhaust fan and LCU Tech Support will not be able to assist either. The opening should be the same size as the downflow design. The gravity blade should be attached in the same manner of the downflow design.
Other considerations to keep in mind are:
- Location to be installed. Ensure that the installation doesn't hamper access to other equipment.
- Structural Integrity of ductwork where the exhaust fan will be mounted. Ductwork will have to be strengthened to support the weight of the exhaust fan.
- The control wiring will need to be longer, and connected at same points. Its all binary 24 vac.
- Routing for control and power wires. Ensure that wiring is properly protected to prevent damage. Recommend adding the addition length to the powered exhaust fan side of the harness since the control and power connection end use plugs that connect to board and harnesses in the unit.
Several specialty manufacturers like MicroMetl, Thybar, Canfab, Plenums, etc. do offer powered exhaust accessories with various features. These are normally mounted to horizontal ducting and generally require a separate power supply. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer concerning if a separate power supply is needed and for instructions on proper installment.
