Hot Surface Ignitors (HSI) are used on Voyager II/III staged gas heat and modulating gas heat. They perform 2 functions:
-Ignition source to light the burner
-Flame proving
Reasons for failure:
- Moisture or oils from hands during handling can cause failure when the HSI is energized
- HSI are constructed from recrystallized silicon carbide and are sensitive to moisture and oils. Avoid touching the element end when handling.
- Input voltage issues
- Input voltage is provided by TNS2 secondary terminals X1 & X2. Voltage should be between 105vac to 132vac. Verify that TNS2 primary voltage taps (H2 or H3) match the input voltage for the unit. X2 on the secondary should be grounded.
- For other voltages, see unit wiring diagram
- Vibration/shock
- Avoid rough handling of the HSI, especially when removing for service.
- Check new parts when purchasing

- Check cold resistance
- HSI manufactured by Coorstek (KIT03033 pre Sept 2021) resistance range = 40-80Ω @ 75°F
- HSI manufactured by SCP (KIT03033USA Sept 2021-current) resistance range = 65-120Ω @ 75°F
- Check amperage of HSI when energized
- HSI manufactured by Coorstek (KIT03033 pre Sept 2021) range = 3.5 - 3.9A @ 132vac
- HSI manufactured by SCP (KIT03033USA Sept 2021-current) range = 3.3 - 3.7A @ 116vac
- Visual inpsection
- Check HSI for cracks or damage in the element
- Lines of what appears to be dust or soot indicate a crack that has not completely separated
- Flame check
- The IGN board of V2/V3 unit has "Flame Check" terminals for checking voltage with a DC volt meter
- 1 vdc = 1µA DC, Typical "good" flame signal is 2µA DC to 8µA DC

In September 2021, the factory changed manufacturers for HSI due to supplier shortages. With this change, the cold resistance range changed. See below for manufacturer differences and part numbers.
