All barometric relief kits are built and designed for downflow applications and mounted on the unit. Trane does not offer a barometric relief kit for horizontal applications as it requires the barometric relief to be installed on the return duct upstream of the return damper. Due to the varying factors on horizontal return ducts (size, length since every duct would be custom), design has never been done to accommodate horizontal barometric relief.
The barometric relief option is designed only for downflow units; however, the barometric relief assembly has been successfully installed on horizontal units. Because the ductwork is coming into the side of the unit, it is necessary to attach the barometric relief to the side of the ductwork before it connects to the side of the unit.
There are no drawings or reference materials for assisting in how to install the barometric relief and LCU Tech Support will not be able to assist either. The opening should be the same size as the downflow design. The barometric relief should be attached in the same manner of the downflow design.
Other considerations to keep in mind are:
- Location to be installed. Ensure that the installation doesn't hamper access to other equipment.
Several specialty manufacturers like MicroMetl, Thybar, Canfab, Plenums, etc. do offer barometric relief accessories with various features. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer concerning installation.
