- *LCU Smoke Detector Wiring and Installation Questions
Where in the unit can I mount a field installed smoke detector?
-We do not recommend mounting field installed smoke detectors in the unit as it affects the unit UL rating. Field installed smoke detectors should be installed in the supply/return ducts connected to the unit and wired back to the unit E-Stop terminals:
ReliaTel equipment at LTB-5 & 6 ( Where do I wire my field installed smoke detector? )
Symbio700 equipment at J18-1 & 2 ( Odyssey Symbio 700 Emergency Stop Input )
Do factory installed smoke detectors communicate?
-No, factory installed detectors do not communicate.
Where does the fire alarm company wire to the factory mounted return/supply smoke detector?
-In the factory supply/return detector, terminals 6 & 17 are used for the alarm notification back to the RTOM and should NOT be used by the fire alarm company. Doing so usually creates an alarm at the unit and shuts it down.
-The detector has another set of SPDT (7 = NC, 8 = NO, 18 = C) contacts for alarm notification and a set of NO (13 = NO, 14 = C) contacts for fire alarm control panel connection, see attachment at the bottom of this article for the smoke detector wiring diagram.
-For more information about the factory installed supply/return smoke detectors, please contact the manufacturer: Air Products & Controls, 888-332-2241
Where does the fire alarm company wire to the factory mounted plenum smoke detector?
-Please contact the manufacturer: Air Products & Controls, 888-332-2241
We need to power the factory installed smoke detector from a separate source to avoid nuisance alarms at the fire panel during unit maintenance, how do we do this?
-We do not recommend doing this as it requires cutting the factory harness, requires wiring modifications at the detector and may affect the UL listing of the unit.
-Factory detectors do not communicate and would not produce a communications or trouble fault at the panel if powered down.
-The FACP should be monitoring the status of the dry contacts only, these will not change when powering the smoke detector down unless otherwise noted in the installation instructions.
-If this still does not meet the requirements for the project, install field mounted detectors in the ductwork.
What is the part number for the kit to field install the factory smoke detectors?
-We do not offer a kit to install smoke detectors in units that were not built with them.
In this scenario, a field mounted detector should be used mounted in the duct work and wired back to the unit emergency stop.
