Issue:
Can a step down transformer be used on the incoming power feed to the chiller to power the 115 volt evaporator heaters?
Resolution:
- It is not recommended that the chiller's control power transformer be used to power the heat tape. The chiller's CPT is not sized large enough to power the heat tape. Also, it is not a good idea for the chiller freeze protection to be wired to the chiller CPT because if the power were removed from the chiller the unit would not have any heater protection
- If it is wired separately, then the protection would be maintained if the chiller were powered down. Removing power from the heaters must be a conscious decision by the owner and should not be tied in to any other power use that would allow it to be removed unintentionally
- See IOM for specific requirements regarding heaters and freeze protection
