On RTAF chillers with the free cooling option, it is required that some type of freeze inhibitor (glycol) be added to the chilled water loop. Often, the concentration is selected based on a temperature that is at least 5°F lower than the lowest anticipated design operating temperature. Because glycol is a requirement, there are no heaters installed on the free cooling coils or the associated water piping on the chiller.
Insulation will be added to the compressor and oil separator body to help protect against refrigerant migration. In addition, the 3 and 4 compressor refrigerant receivers will be insulated. Insulation will also be added to the entering evaporator chilled water piping from the customer water connection through to the evaporator. For the wye connection, the insulation will stop at the valve flanges.
