Issue: RTAE, ACRA, and ACRB chillers with EBM manufactured condenser fan motors are no longer available from Trane parts.
- SyMAX-i condenser fan motors (Regal Beloit) are currently the only service parts replacement option available.
- Things to keep in mind when replacing EBM fan motors with SyMAX-i motors:
Resolution:
1. Verify that each mounting bracket has four holes for both EBM and SyMax-i motors. If not, mounting brackets will need to be ordered from the local parts center (BRK04380 is the part number). See Figure 1-1 for mounting details.
Figure 1-1
2. Prior to installing the motor, remove rubber/plastic plug from the motor terminal cover plate. See Figure 1-2.
Figure 1-2
3. Remove the motor terminal cover and verify the dip-switch settings.
- See Figure 1-3 for dip-switch location in the Regal Motor.
- See Table 1-1 for Trane default Regal motor dip-switch settings.
- See Figure 1-4 for Connection diagram.

4. Motor Rotation
- It is possible to change the rotation of the motor from CCW to CW by toggling the switch # 2 label as CCW - CW in figure 1-4.
- Rotation changes should only be made with power removed from the unit. (Motor direction change will not be implemented until positional switch is toggled and power has been removed and then reapplied to the unit. )
5. Field technicians have reported startup failures at some jobsites. The motors will not start when commanded and will windmill backwards after a failed start. A root cause analysis is ongoing. Below are a few factors that may be related to this issue.
- Dirty coils – Dirty coils increase the static pressure across the coil. This increases the torque required by the motor to start. Cleaning the coils will reduce the amount of torque required to start and decrease the likelihood of a failure.
- Fan Banking – Fan Bank 1 is the first group of motors to start when the unit receives a call for cooling. When additional capacity is required, Fan Bank 2 is commanded to start. The startup of Fan Bank 2 is more severe due to the air flow/pressure created by Fan Bank 1. If possible, install replacement motors in Fan Bank 1 to decrease the likelihood of a startup failure
NOTE:
- Ordering parts, expediting and status updates for parts, can only be performed and provided by your local Trane Parts store counter sales associate.
- CHVAC Technical support cannot assist with any of those aspects of motor/parts replacement.
- Once you have the replacement motor at the jobsite, contact Pueblo Technical Support ( https://tranetechsupportcso.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new ) if you need assistance replacing the failed motor.
- Both EBM or SyMAX motors are approved to install on these units, however, SyMAX will be the only one available through Trane Parts and Supply.
