Discharge Line Weight Modification RTAF

Overview:

• RTAF chillers while operating at part load, may experience harmonic noise and vibration in the discharge lines and/or oil separator.
• It has been seen that at certain compressor speeds between 1800 - 3600 RPM the vibration can exceed expected design maximums.
• If the chillers/circuits operate in this region long enough, the energy of the vibration can result in copper line fatigue failure; or oil separator material/weld failure.
• Chillers/Circuits affected by this issue:
  • 3-compressor RTAF...circuit 1 & circuit 2
  • 4-compressor RTAF...circuit 1 ONLY

Resolution:

• It has been demonstrated that adding mass to the discharge lines in specific locations can minimize/eliminate the vibration energy.
• Factory, as well as field vibration testing, has identified the locations on the discharge line to place mass/weights for maximum dampening to occur.
  • 3-compressor RTAF chillers will have a single weight on Circuit 1; and two weights on Circuit 2
  • 4-compressor RTAF chillers will have a single weight on Circuit 1.

  • mm measurement are for reference ONLY...the intent is to place the weight as close to the swedge as possible while ensuring weight ID contacts copper pipe OD entirely.

  • mm measurement are for reference ONLY...the intent is to place the weight as close to the swedge as possible while ensuring weight ID contacts copper pipe OD entirely.

    • 4-compressor RTAF will need a single weight kit
    • 3-compressor RTAF will need three (3) weight kits
    • weight fastener bolt torque:  20 FT-LBS
    • Thread Locker:  Loctite 242  (BLUE)
      • add to bolts when assembling weight KIT onto discharge line
