Issue:
Why can't I get a Lo Vi compressor?
Resolution:
Our practice has been to provide all GP1 service compressors as Hi Vi. The reason for this is:
1) A Hi Vi compressor running in a low pressure ratio application will be reliable.
2) A Lo Vi compressor mistakenly put into a high pressure ratio application is at risk of failure. We didn't want to live with the risk of a mix-up.
3) A Hi Vi compressor will not be quite as efficient as a Lo Vi compressor in a low pressure ratio application, but the loss is in the range of 1 or 2%.
We felt that the reliability risks more than offset the efficiency gain, so we settled on Hi Vi compressors. If the RTWA unit was new and in warranty, we had typically built a Lo Vi compressor here in Pueblo to replace any failures, but that is not an option.
