Issue:
Compressor immediately loading up
Resolution:
RTHB and RTHA Chillers:
- When the RTHB/RTHA compressor immediately loads up there are a couple of possible problems that could cause this.
- Verify whether the problem is electrical or mechanical.
- To check for an electrical problem, verify the load solenoid is not being continuously energized by looking at the triac output on J4-1 of the 1U2 (RTHB Circuit Module); or the 1U1-A (RTHA Relay Module).
- If the problem is mechanical, the highest probable suspect would be a fractured internal hydraulic oil line.
- To check the integrity of this line, you will first need to isolate the compressor.
- Block off the load and unload solenoid valves off with shim stock.
- By doing this, you will have isolated the piston cavity of the compressor.
- Use your manifold gauge set and pressurize the piston fitting (between the load and unload solenoid valve).
- If the pressure immediately leaks from this cavity, the oil tank will need to be removed and the line will need to be repaired.
- A worn or damaged Piston Compression Ring can also cause this same problem; verify from above whether or not the piston or hydraulic line is the issue.
Refer to RTHA-SB-12 and RTHA-SB-15 for additional resources, including visual aids. When oil tank is removed from compressor and the piston cavity is pressurized, you can see the pressure immediately bleed from the fracture on the line.
Notes:
Changes:
Replaced load and unload solenoid valves.
