Issue:
Can I convert the RTWD chiller from R134a to R513a refrigerant?
Resolution:
RTUD is not available for R513A application.
RTUD is only available and supported for R134a refrigerant.
For RTWD package unit, replacing R134a with R513A is a relatively easy process.
-
What parts need to be changed out?
- Just refrigerant
-
Limitations imposed
- ONLY can be applied to certain selected chiller configurations.
-
Different lubricant / oil? *** read additional comments under NOTES ***
- Same oil
-
Does the refrigerant system need to be cleaned/flushed before putting new oil and R513A refrigerant?
- No, R513A is compatible with R134a
-
Do we have a need to install new MP Software in the DynaView Controls for R513A; and does the Trane technician have to manually change the settings/safeties?
- Yes, the Controls MP Software will need to be updated to the latest version in KestrelView/TechView v15.0; and the configuration will need to be updated to show R513A – utilizing slightly different properties and control algorithms.
Notes:
-
R513A can ONLY be applied with RTWD chillers that have Hi-Vi compressors installed.
- Low Temperature Process selected chillers.
- High Condensing Temperature or Hot Water Control selected chillers.
- RTWD standard application with Low-Vi compressors and current chiller controls could compromise compressor and chiller reliability due to superheat limitation and lubrication/oil-return and oil quality issues.
Other Question/Problem/Cause Statements:
- What is necessary to convert an RTWD charged with R134a to R513A?
- Can this chiller be converted to R513A?
- Is RTWD convertible and compatible with R513A refrigerant?
- Is RTUD convertible and compatible with R513A refrigerant?
- Low GWP options for RTWD chillers?
- Low GWP options for RTUD chillers?
- Low GWP conversion option for RTWD?
- Low GWP conversion option for RTUD?
