Issue:
Broken evaporator and/or condenser tubes
Resolution:
- Remove the water as soon as possible
- The compressor should be isolated and a vacuum pump be put on it in order to dehydrate
- Valve off the liquid line angle valve and use a separate vacuum pump on the condenser in order to dehydrate
- After ensuring the chilled water is valved off, the heads should be removed
- Pressurize the refrigerant side (on the low side, and/or high side of the chiller) and check for leaking tubes
- Have an eddy current test done to check the integrity of the rest of the tubes
Notes:
Dehydrating the chiller does not guarantee no damage has been done. Because of the metal make up of the compressor, the internal components (bearings and rotors) are susceptible to corrosion.
