Issue:
How should the braze plate heat exchanger be cleaned?
Resolution:
- Due to the typically high degree of turbulence in the BPHE, there is a self-cleaning effect in the channels.
- However, in certain applications, such as when using extremely hard water at high temperatures, the tendency for fouling can be significant.
- In such cases, it is recommended to clean the exchanger by circulating a cleaning liquid using a CIP (cleaning in place) method.
- A tank with weak acid, such as 5% phosphoric acid or, in cases where the exchanger requires frequent cleaning, 5% oxalic acid, can be used. The cleaning liquid should be pumped through the exchanger.
- For optimal cleaning, the flow rate of the cleaning solution should be at least 1.5 times the normal flow rate, preferably in a back-flush mode. After use, it is important to thoroughly rinse the heat exchanger with clean water. A solution of 1-2% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) can be used before the final rinse to neutralize any remaining acid. Regular cleaning at designated intervals is recommended.
